How does delaying your period work?

Norethindrone is a prescription hormone (a progestin) that holds the lining of your uterus steady. Your period starts when hormone levels fall at the end of your cycle — norethindrone keeps them from falling, so your period waits until you’re ready. You start taking it about 3 days before your expected period, one tablet three times a day, and keep taking it for as long as you want the delay — up to 10 or 20 days depending on your prescription. When you stop, your period typically arrives 2–3 days later.

Norethindrone is a well-established prescription medication that clinicians commonly prescribe to temporarily delay menstruation when appropriate.

Common reasons to postpone your period

  • Vacation or travel — especially beach and pool trips
  • Your wedding or a special event
  • Athletic competition or a race
  • Religious observance
  • Work — deployments, shifts, or a big week

Timing matters: norethindrone works best when started before your period is due. Once bleeding has begun, it usually cannot stop a period that has already started — so plan a few days ahead.

Two important things to know

Norethindrone for period delay is NOT birth control. It will not prevent pregnancy. Use a reliable backup method — such as condoms — with any intercourse while taking it.

Sun tip for your trip: this medication may increase the risk of facial skin discoloration (melasma). Use sunscreen and limit excessive sun exposure — especially on a beach vacation.

Tips from the providers who treat this

Pedro Alvarez, PA-C

“Timing decides everything with period delay. Start norethindrone about three days before your period is due — once bleeding has begun, the medication usually can't stop it. If you have a trip or event coming up, submit your visit a week ahead so we can time the prescription right.”

Ivis Alvarez, FNP-C

“Two reminders I give every patient: norethindrone is not birth control, so use a backup method like condoms if pregnancy prevention is needed. Also, use sunscreen and limit excessive sun exposure, since hormonal medications can increase the risk of melasma in some people.”

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about delaying your period with norethindrone at Goza Health.

Is norethindrone birth control?

No. Norethindrone taken to delay your period is NOT contraception and will not prevent pregnancy. Use a reliable backup method — such as condoms — with any intercourse while taking it.

How do I delay my period for a vacation or wedding?

Start norethindrone about 3 days before your expected period — 1 tablet three times a day — and keep taking it through your trip or event, up to your prescribed limit. Stop when you’re ready, and your period arrives about 2–3 days later.

How long can I postpone my period?

Up to 10 days (30 tablets) or up to 20 days (60 tablets), depending on what your provider prescribes for your plans. You can stop sooner — the delay lasts only while you take the medication.

What if my period has already started?

Norethindrone usually cannot stop a period that has already begun. It works best started about 3 days before your period is due — so plan ahead when you can.

Is delaying your period safe?

For most people, yes — short-term norethindrone is a well-established way to postpone a period, and it doesn’t affect future cycles or fertility. It isn’t right for everyone: your provider screens for pregnancy, blood-clot history, breast cancer, liver disease, and other factors before prescribing.

Who shouldn’t delay their period?

Norethindrone is well tolerated by most people, but period delay may not be right for you if:

  • You could be pregnant — a missed period could be a pregnancy, not something to delay
  • You have a history of blood clots (DVT/PE) or a clotting disorder
  • You have a history of breast cancer or serious liver disease
  • Your period has already started — norethindrone usually can’t stop bleeding that has begun

This isn’t a complete list — the questionnaire covers your full health history, and a licensed Florida provider makes the final call on whether norethindrone is safe for you.

What are the side effects?

Some people notice bloating, breast tenderness, light spotting, or mood changes — usually mild and short-lived. This medication may also increase the risk of facial skin discoloration (melasma), so use sunscreen and limit excessive sun exposure while taking it.

What if I have spotting or breakthrough bleeding while taking it?

Light spotting can happen while taking norethindrone and doesn’t mean it isn’t working — it usually settles on its own. If bleeding becomes heavy like a full period, or you’re concerned, message us and your provider will advise.

What’s the difference between delaying your period once and skipping periods long-term?

Norethindrone is a short-term, one-time tool — you take it around a specific trip or event, then stop. People who use combined hormonal birth control (the pill, patch, or ring) can often skip periods on an ongoing basis by skipping the scheduled break week under their provider’s guidance. If that’s what you’re looking for, mention it in your visit and your provider will recommend the right approach.

I already take birth control pills — can I delay my period?

Often yes — and usually without a new medication. If you take a combined pill (or use the patch or ring), skipping the placebo/break week is often the simpler way to delay a period. Mention it in the questionnaire and your provider will recommend the best approach.

Will delaying my period affect my cycle or fertility?

No lasting effect — norethindrone works only while you take it. After your delayed period arrives, your cycle returns to its usual pattern.

How much does it cost to delay your period?

A single message visit costs $79, and the medication is $8.48 for 30 tablets via Cost Plus Drugs. Members ($69/mo) get message visits included, so you only pay for the medication.

Do I need a video call?

No. Complete a private message visit online — a licensed Florida provider reviews your responses within 2–4 hours during business hours.

Are there any age restrictions?

Yes — Goza Health treats adults age 18 and older. If you’re under 18, please see a local provider in person.

Will I still be charged if I’m not approved for treatment?

The $79 visit fee covers your provider’s clinical evaluation, whether or not a prescription is the safe outcome — if norethindrone isn’t right for you, your provider will explain why and suggest next steps. If we determine your situation isn’t appropriate for telehealth before any clinical decision is made, you receive a full refund. Details in our Patient Financial Consent.

Can I delay my period if I’m not in Florida?

Goza Health treats patients who are physically located in Florida at the time of their visit — residents and visitors alike. If you’re vacationing in Florida, we can help.
