How does hair loss treatment online work?

Pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is one of the most common causes of gradual hair thinning in adults — a hormone-driven process that affects both men and women. In men it usually shows up as a receding hairline or a thinning crown; in women, as widening of the part or overall thinning on top. Treatment may slow further hair loss and may promote partial regrowth, but results vary.

Because pattern hair loss is diagnosed from your history and the way your hair is thinning, it’s well suited to telehealth: you answer a focused questionnaire, upload clear photos of your scalp from five angles, and a licensed Florida provider builds a treatment plan around your pattern, your sex, and your health history.

Signs we commonly treat

  • Receding hairline or thinning at the temples
  • Thinning crown or a widening part
  • Gradual overall thinning on top
  • Family history of pattern hair loss, now showing up in you

Not every kind of hair loss should be treated online. Sudden or patchy loss, scalp pain, itching or scaling, or hair loss with other symptoms can point to a different cause that needs an in-person exam — the questionnaire screens for these, and if we see them we’ll direct you to the right care instead of prescribing.

Two important things to know

Results take time. Early changes may be noticeable after 3–6 months, but meaningful results can take 6–12 months of consistent treatment. Results vary, and continued use is generally necessary to maintain benefits. A temporary increase in shedding can occur during the first several weeks after starting minoxidil and does not necessarily mean the treatment is failing.

Pregnancy changes the plan. These medications are not used during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant, may be pregnant, or are trying to conceive shouldn’t take them — and shouldn’t handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets. The questionnaire screens for this carefully, and your provider will confirm what’s safe for you.

HOW IT WORKS

Treat your hair loss from home

Answer a short questionnaire about your hair-loss pattern and health history — about 5 minutes, in English or Spanish

Upload five scalp photos — front, top, crown, left and right — in bright, even light. Your photos are protected health information under HIPAA: encrypted, visible only to your care team, never shared or sold

A licensed Florida provider reviews your answers and photos, chooses the right medication plan for you, and sends the prescription electronically to your preferred pharmacy

Check in at 90 days with new photos so your provider can track progress, manage side effects, and adjust your plan

Affordable hair loss medication

We prescribe proven generics at a fraction of retail prices via Cost Plus Drugs (online pharmacy).

Medication Who It’s For Cost Plus Price
Finasteride 1 mg (30 tablets) Men — once daily $5.83
Minoxidil 2.5 mg oral (30 tablets) Men & women — dose sized by your provider $5.83
Spironolactone 50 mg (30 tablets) Women — dose individualized by your provider $6.00
Spironolactone 100 mg (30 tablets) Women — dose individualized by your provider $6.90
Minoxidil 5% topical (solution or foam) Men & women — applied to the scalp Over the counter at any pharmacy

Oral minoxidil and spironolactone are commonly prescribed off-label for hair loss when a licensed provider determines they are appropriate. Off-label means the medication is FDA-approved, but not specifically FDA-approved for this use.

Some men may benefit from combining finasteride and topical minoxidil — your provider will recommend the right plan.

From our clinical team

Tips from the providers who treat this

Pedro Alvarez, PA-C

“Hair regrowth is measured in months, not weeks. Early changes may show after three to six months, and meaningful results can take six to twelve — so give your treatment time before you judge it. A temporary increase in shedding in the first weeks on minoxidil doesn't necessarily mean it's failing. Your baseline photos matter: they're how we'll both see the progress you can't notice day to day.”

Ivis Alvarez, FNP-C

“For women, pregnancy safety is especially important. Spironolactone and oral minoxidil are not prescribed through our program during pregnancy, so use reliable contraception while taking them and contact us right away if you think you may be pregnant. Please also let us know about new muscle weakness, an irregular or racing heartbeat, dizziness, or swelling so we can review your treatment promptly.”

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about treating hair loss online with Goza Health.

Is treating hair loss online safe?

Yes — pattern hair loss is diagnosed from your history and photos, which makes it a good fit for telehealth. The questionnaire screens for relevant medical conditions, medications, pregnancy considerations, and symptoms that may affect whether treatment is appropriate, and a licensed Florida provider reviews everything before prescribing. If your answers or photos suggest a different cause or a condition that needs hands-on care, we’ll route you to an in-person or live visit instead.

How long until I see results?

Early changes may be noticeable after 3–6 months, but meaningful results can take 6–12 months of consistent treatment. Results vary, and continued use is generally necessary to maintain benefits. A temporary increase in shedding can occur during the first several weeks after starting minoxidil and does not necessarily mean the treatment is failing. Your 90-day photo check-in is how we track progress objectively.

What medications do you prescribe for men?

Finasteride 1 mg daily, minoxidil 5% topical, or both together — some men may benefit from combining finasteride and topical minoxidil. Low-dose oral minoxidil is an option when topical isn’t a good fit (it’s prescribed off-label for hair loss). Your provider recommends the plan based on your pattern, preferences, and health history.

What are my options as a woman?

Female pattern hair loss is common and treatable. Options include minoxidil 5% topical (applied once daily for women), low-dose oral minoxidil, and spironolactone — a daily tablet that works on the hormonal side of thinning. Oral minoxidil and spironolactone are prescribed off-label for hair loss when your provider determines they’re appropriate. Finasteride isn’t used for women in our program. Not sure which is right? Choose “let my provider decide” in the questionnaire.

Can I take these medications if I’m pregnant or trying to conceive?

No. These medications are not used during pregnancy, and we don’t prescribe them if you’re pregnant, may be pregnant, or are actively trying to conceive. If there’s any uncertainty, the questionnaire asks for a negative home pregnancy test taken within the past 72 hours. Women taking spironolactone or oral minoxidil should use reliable contraception — and anyone pregnant or possibly pregnant should not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets.

What are finasteride’s side effects?

Most men tolerate finasteride well. A small number notice sexual side effects (reduced libido, erectile changes) or mood changes — if you do, tell us promptly and your provider will adjust the plan. The questionnaire also screens your mood and prostate history up front so finasteride is only offered when it’s appropriate.

Why do you need photos of my scalp?

Five baseline photos — front, top, crown, left and right, in bright even light — let your provider see your pattern of thinning, and give us an objective “before” to compare against at your 90-day check-in. Your photos are protected health information under HIPAA: encrypted when sent and stored, visible only to your care team as part of your medical record, and never shared or sold.

What happens after I start treatment?

At 90 days we email you a short check-in: new photos from the same five angles, how treatment is going, and any side effects. Your provider compares your progress, manages anything that’s come up, and continues or adjusts your plan. Hair-loss treatment is ongoing — prescriptions are refilled through these quick follow-ups rather than automatically, so your provider stays in the loop.

What if my hair loss is sudden or patchy?

Sudden shedding, patchy bald spots, scalp pain, itching, scaling, or hair loss alongside other symptoms can point to causes that need an in-person exam — like alopecia areata, infections, or medical conditions. The questionnaire screens for these patterns, and if we see them we’ll direct you to the right care instead of prescribing online.

How much does hair loss treatment cost?

A single message visit costs $79. Generic medications are inexpensive — finasteride and oral minoxidil currently start at approximately $5.83 for a 30-tablet supply through Cost Plus Drugs (prices checked July 13, 2026, excluding shipping and any applicable fees — prices can change); topical minoxidil is available over the counter. Members ($69/mo) get message visits included, so you only pay for the medication.

Do I need a video call?

Most visits do not require a video call — most hair-loss visits are completed as a private message visit, reviewed by a licensed Florida provider within 2–4 hours during business hours. Certain heart, kidney, blood-pressure, or potassium-related concerns may prevent you from completing the asynchronous pathway. In that situation, we may recommend a live visit or direct you back to your treating clinician.

Are there any age restrictions?

Yes — Goza Health treats adults age 18 and older. If you’re under 18, please see a local provider in person.

Will I still be charged if I’m not approved for treatment?

The $79 visit fee covers your provider’s clinical evaluation, whether or not a prescription is the safe outcome — if these medications aren’t right for you, your provider will explain why and suggest next steps. If we determine your situation isn’t appropriate for telehealth before any clinical decision is made, you receive a full refund. Details in our Patient Financial Consent.

Can I get hair loss treatment if I’m not in Florida?

Goza Health treats patients who are physically located in Florida at the time of their visit — residents and visitors alike.
